RAPID Rehab now includes three cutting-edge dual-task assessments designed to evaluate balance and cognitive performance simultaneously. These tests help identify subtle balance deficits, executive function challenges, and fall risk.
System Advantage:
RAPID Rehab captures postural stability and balance automatically through the built-in Sway Index. Center of Pressure (CoP) excursion is presented for an easy-to-understand interpretation for both the clinician and the patient, enhancing engagement, accountability, and gamification in therapy. This is especially useful for patients with balance concerns, neurological conditions, or those at risk of falls.
How to Perform These Tests:
Select your patient.
Under Primary Complaint, select General Imbalance.
Choose one of the following Cognitive-Motor Dual Task Tests:
Cognitive Balance – Counting
Cognitive Balance – Shapes and Colors
Cognitive Balance – Stroop
1️⃣ Counting Balance Test (Dual-Task Postural Control Test)
Purpose:
Evaluate postural stability while performing a cognitive task (counting). Detects dual-task interference, balance deficits, and fall risk, especially in older adults or those with neurological conditions.
Test Conditions:
Forward Counting: Count from 1 to 10 while standing as still as possible.
Backward Counting: Count backward from 10 to 1 while standing, increasing cognitive demand.
What to Observe:
RAPID Gravity Mat captures postural sway; the lower the sway excursion, the better the control.
Balance adjustments (steps, arm support, loss of stance)
Cognitive performance (counting errors or hesitation)
Outcome:
Compare balance and counting performance during dual-task vs. quiet standing, with automatic metrics from the Sway Index and CoP excursion, providing easy-to-understand interpretation for both clinician and patient.
2️⃣ Cognitive-Postural Dual-Task: Shape & Color Naming
Purpose:
Assess postural control while performing visual-cognitive tasks like naming shapes and colors. Highlights how cognitive load affects standing balance.
Test Conditions:
Shape Only: Name the shape while standing still.
Shape + Color: Name both the color and shape while standing.
Example Stimuli:
Tips for Use:
Present one card at a time.
Record accuracy, reaction time, and postural sway.
RAPID Gravity Mat captures sway and CoP excursion, providing an easy-to-understand interpretation for both clinician and patient, adding engagement, accountability, and gamification to therapy.
3️⃣ Stroop Balance Test
Purpose:
Measure executive function, selective attention, and inhibitory control under postural challenge. Detects cognitive-motor interference and subtle balance issues.
Equipment Needed:
RAPID Gravity Mat
Stroop stimuli (printed cards or digital display)
Stopwatch (optional)
Chair or hand support for safety
Test Instructions – Standing:
Stand as still as possible on the RAPID Gravity Mat.
Present one flashcard at a time.
Conditions:
Condition 1 – Name the ink color of each word (classic Stroop task).
Condition 2 – Name the ink color only when the word matches the color of the ink (increased inhibitory control challenge).
Outcome Measures:
Postural sway (automatically captured Sway Index and CoP excursion; lower sway excursion = better control)
Cognitive performance (accuracy, reaction time)
Dual-task performance compared to baseline standing
✅ Clinical Insight
These dual-task tests, combined with automatic Sway Index and CoP tracking, provide a clear picture of cognitive-motor interaction. Presenting the data in an easy-to-understand way for both clinicians and patients enhances:
Engagement – patients can see their performance in real time
Accountability – encourages participation and tracking progress
Gamification – adds motivation and enjoyment to therapy
They help therapists:
Detect early balance deficits
Identify executive function challenges
Tailor rehabilitation and fall prevention strategies
Final Thoughts
With RAPID Rehab’s dual-task assessments, therapists now have a powerful, automated tool to measure cognitive-motor interaction while making therapy more engaging for patients. Whether you’re working with older adults, stroke survivors, or patients with neurological conditions, these tests provide actionable insights to improve balance, cognitive performance, and overall safety.
